“Bullion bankers” typically refer to a financial institution that specializes in the trading and management of precious metals, including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. These institutions may be commercial banks, investment banks, or other financial firms that offer services such as buying and selling precious metals, storing, and managing bullion holdings, and providing investment advice to clients. Most have active trading desks focused on bullion trading.
Some examples of bullion bankers include JPMorgan, HSBC, and ScotiaBank, ICBC Standard Bank all of which are all major players in the global bullion market. They often hold significant amounts of precious metals in their own vaults, and are active in trading and hedging precious metals on behalf of clients. Most of what they do is trade in paper derivatives of bullion, such as futures contracts, options, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), not physical bullion like bars, coins rounds etc.
BUT By no means are BullionBankers only Institutions, You and I are bullion bankers!
It’s important to note that the term “bullion banker” can also be used more broadly to refer to anyone involved in the buying and selling of bullion, including individual investors and dealers who specialize in bullion trading.
